How To Finish A Novel

I've published 1 book, am editing a 2nd, and I'm writing 2 more-- Right now I feel like an expert on the art of finishing a novel. Though, to be clear, I am not. HOWEVER, I have learned a lot of tips and tricks that will help get you to the finish line.

For me, it's all about the numbers. Don't worry, no heavy math required. One of the first things I do when I start a novel is get certain number goals established. This is key in helping me get to the finish line.

So in this week's topic video, I lay it all out for you. Every number from how long your novel should be, to what you should be writing every day. I really hope this helps some of the buddy authors out there. -Lindsay

A Writer's Nightmare...Literally.

I'm no stranger to nightmares. I've had plenty about zombies and more than a few about demons--which scare the crap out of me. But I've never had one like this before. If you're not a writer or a creative person, than you probably won't understand why this dream qualifies as a nightmare. Trust me when I say, it really did scare me.

In this dream, I'm hosting a contest to help publish and promote my next book. All contestants must write The Beauty for me. The winner will have their version published and be listed in the credits of the book. I know, that's a super shitty contest. Write a whole book and all you get is a special credit in the book? Maybe they got paid too, but I couldn't really say. Still, what kind of crappy contest is that? There's no accounting for what the brain comes up with.

Crappy contest or not, it worked. People turned out in droves with their submissions. I looked them over and selected the best one to represent The Hunter Legends, book 2. There was a lot of fanfare and applause. It was a big deal. Now all I needed was for the winner to send me the completed manuscript.

But the first sign of trouble came when the winner's agent (Yes, this guy had an agent. This random, plucked-from-obscurity dude had an agent. That was warning alarm #1) told me that the winner already had an interview with Romantic Times Magazine.

"What?! But I'm the author of the book! He's just a credit, call him a co-author at best. I don't even want his name on my cover," is what I say to my made up dream friends.

Days go by and the signs just keep piling up. The finished manuscript of The Beauty still hasn't shown up, which makes me very uncomfortable. Why hasn't he sent it? Meanwhile, buzz for The Beauty is reaching levels that I never expected. But they all want interviews with the winner and credit the winner with creation of the series!

That's when the anxiety starts. These are my characters! This is my series! I've worked my butt off making it all come together. Belle, Aleksander, Gastone, Edvina, Laramie, and all the rest of them are in my blood--they're apart of me. But this guy wins a contest and suddenly the world hands him all of my beloved hard work. I also recall complaining that the only reason he's getting notoriety is because he's a man. You know how the public is, a man writes a romance and they go crazy for it. Just look at Nicholas Sparks. He's a man, so it must be good. *eyeroll*

But what really gets me is the idea that I've lost my series. I realize during all of this that, while he wrote The Beauty, I don't know if he did it right. Did he tell the story the way I intended? Did he take the story in the right directions? My god, what if he represented the characters wrong and sent them down paths that weren't supposed to exist.

And that's when I woke up. Heart racing, sweat beading on my forehead-- and fearing that the winner was going to be standing at the end of my bed, holding my book and yelling, "It's mine! It's all mine!"

But wait, it was just a dream! It wasn't real. That's right, I've already written The Beauty. I did it all by myself and no one else can ever steal it from me, and I know the story was done the right way. So calm down, Lindsay. It's okay. All is right in the world.

Thank god.

And that is a writer's nightmare. Fear that someone might steal your work and fear that they might not do the story justice. Never had dreams about people hating my books and only ever getting 1 star reviews. While those things would make me super sad, at least my books would still be mine. I could still write them and love them, and it wouldn't matter what anyone else thought.

But someone stealing my characters from me and not giving them the story they deserve--Well, I just couldn't deal with that.

So thank god it was just a dream. Breathe that beautiful sigh of relief. -Lindsay Mead

Trying To Do It All... But Failing

It's 2am and I'm thinking that I really need to go to bed, because tomorrow I need to be up early. I'm going to the museum with my mother to see the new King Tut exhibit. Yeah, I'm hella excited about it. However, I've thought very little about it tonight. Instead my mind is continually going over the gazillion things that I need and want to do.

Let me see if I can quickly list all of the things that I'm trying to accomplish in any given day: Writing/editing 2 books, book marketing, a daily YouTube vlog, a topic video on my author channel, dieting, exercise, active social media accounts, blog posts, updating blog features, and reading. That's just the average stuff. That doesn't include things like Christmas shopping, decorating, gift wrapping, or anything seasonal such as that. Maybe that seems like a lot to you, or maybe it doesn't, but to me it is.

I suffer from two personal issues: procrastination and...Oh let's just call it being overwhelmed. I tend to bounce between the two. It's so easy to put things off--just 5 more minutes, 30 more minutes...I'll get to it after this movie. Before I know it, I've got 4 hours before bed and only enough time to do a couple things.

Then there's the being overwhelmed part. I really want to work on this side book...Oh but I should work on The Beauty first...but then I've got to do something interesting for the vlog...Of course, if I don't exercise now, I likely won't later...

See how that works? The cycle normally goes on longer than that until I come full circle. At that point I usually fold up and watch a movie instead of doing anything constructive at all.

Essentially if I can't do it all, than I'll choose to do nothing.

These two issues have been my problem for ages. It's incredibly frustrating. I keep telling myself that I'll be better tomorrow. Often that's not the case. If it is, it doesn't last to the following day.

I often look at authors who run successful blogs and publish at least four books a year or I look at popular youtubers who post interesting videos every week/day while running side business--and I am in awe. How do they do it? How do they juggle it all and never feel overwhelmed? How do that do it all and keep the job from becoming "the job"? I aspire to be them and also think that I never can be.

I have great ideas, but I lack ambition and discipline. I'm more the philosopher type than the inventor type. Meaning that I'd like the spend the day staring at the sky and contemplating what could be; as opposed to those who spend the day making their thoughts a reality.

There are a couple things that I'd like to do to change this quality about myself. One is to take better care of myself. I recently juice fasted for a week. I noticed during that time that I felt more ambition. I just had this rare energy that made me want to get up and get doin. It was wild and wonderful. So I believe that if I continue to eat better and cleanse my body of toxic crap, this will aid me in my desired behavioral changes.

The second thing that I'd like to do is to take it all one thing at a time. Don't look at everything that I need to do all at once. Just pick one thing, do it, then move onto the next. That's why I'm writing this post now. I picked it, I did it, and I refused to think about the fact that I need to work on The Beauty or edit the daily vlog for tomorrow.

So that's where I'm at in my life. I'm trying to do it all--currently failing--but not giving up on myself just yet. If there is anyone out there that is actually reading this, I'd love to know how you cope with all that you have to do... -Lindsay Mead

It Is Done...Again.

So here's how writing a book goes... You start off with this great idea, or more like the seedling of an idea. It gets planted in your squishy, pink brain and it stays there. It drives you mad! So you know you have to get it out and the only way to do that is to write the story.

Except that there's a disclaimer on this little seed that you don't see. The disclaimer states that if you try to remove this seed, it will start to grow. It will get bigger and bigger--fuller and fuller!

Before you know it, you've got this full blown tree in your head. I mean, the thing is massive. It reaches from one end of your skull to the other. Its branches contain characters, backstories, cities, and even whole worlds. You can't write just one book to get it out; you have to write three, four, five, or possibly more!

So you toil and fight. You spend whole months of your life trying to make this tree into a story. Finally, by some will of god, you reach the end of the first book. It was by no means easy, but it sure was exhausting--and oh so worth it.

It's the best feeling of your life!

But you love this story so much that you want others to experience it too, which means that you have to clean it up. Edit. Edit. Then edit some more. You even muster a small army to help you complete this task. They take their cruel, but effective, axes to it and begin chopping away.

At some point they hand you back a few trash bags filled with wood shavings. You cry and rage at the sky for a few days. The horror! THE HORROR! But by the end of day three, you grab those trash bags, dump out the wood shavings, and begin piecing it together again.

Rebuilding the story doesn't take quite as long this time, but it's an emotional rollercoaster. You learn to let go. Very slowly this seedling, that you turned into a tree (Or I suppose it's just a branch of the tree, if I want this analogy to work), becomes a book.

Anyway, Somehow you love it even more the second time around. Ok you also hate it a little bit because you're so sick of looking at it, but you love it.

Then, yet again, you must send it off to your army...and wait. This is where I am at. The horrible stage where you have to wait to hear if your revisions were good or if you botched the whole dang thing.

I've chosen not to sit idle and worry. I've moved onto the second book. That's a
whole barrel of new awesome. Not even gunna lie. I suppose it's daunting for some to have to start all over again, but this is the fun part for me.

So this blog post was suppose to be about finishing my first book for the second time, and it kinda wasn't. It was mostly about the writing process, wasn't it? Or perhaps it was really more about the progression of writing. An author must perpetually move forward. It's about making the book better, getting it to the next stage.

I'd imagine that some people think that when The Beast is published (*cough*April9th*cough*Maybe*cough*), I'll be able to sit back and bask in the glory of my finished book. But they are so wrong! Members of my editing army are already asking for the second book. How long after it's published will it take for readers to start asking the same?

So... An author must perpetually move forward.

Thanks for reading <3 -Lindsay Mead

My 2014 Book Releases

To keep myself on track with my goals this year, I thought it would be wise to share my planned releases. It's out there and I can't take it back, which is that much of a reason to keep working hard.

By the by, I recently bought a FlipHD off ebay. It's used and won't be here for another week or so, BUT I plan to use it for daily vlogs on my personal youtube channel. I've never done daily vlogs, so I have no idea how I will take to it. I can assure you that the videos will be completely different from what ends up on my main channel and won't be book related. I mean, I'll talk about books some but mostly it will be about what's going on in my life, including writing.

This Year's To-Do List

I think it's important to set goals for the New Year. Not just resolutions cuz people tend to go into those expecting to quit. These are legitimate goals, so that I can progress my life, my health, and my career. I don't want to meet 2015 standing in the same place I am now.

They say that the difference between a poor man and a rich man is that a poor man plans for the weekend, but a rich man makes plans for the year. This makes a lot of sense to me. Since hearing this, I've been trying to change the way I look at the future. Start planning farther ahead and thinking about what it is that I want to get out of the year. It's a whole year for crying out loud, it seems like we should be accomplishing a lot. But how many of us really do? How many of us just live the day-to-day, standing in the same place, never moving forward?

I've been like that for the last few years and it's time to knock it off. No more slacking. No more coasting. Sure I've made small steps, but none of it has been enough.

So I'm setting these goals. When I complete one, I'll prove it (if I can) and mark it off the list. Hopefully by the end of the year, I'll be able to see how far I've come :)

New Blog Look & Great Writing Programs!

Look! I redid my blog! You like? I was really unhappy with my last design. The color scheme was way too dark. But I loved that the right side panel had tabs. That meant I could have everything I wanted in my sidebar without overwhelming the blog. On a whim I searched for a new template and came across this one. It's clean and sleek, bright, AND I got to keep my sidebar tabs. It took me all day, but I went through and updated every single page on my blog. So you'll find that all of the information is now up-to-date.

Now, that's enough about how awesome this blog looks (Admit it, it does look awesome). Onto today's video! In this video I give a short overview of several different writing programs. The things I like and the things that I didn't. Feel free to ask me any questions and I'll try to answer.

The Cutting Room Floor: The Beast - Prologue

One of my favorite blogs to read is Kelly Barnhill's blog (Author of Iron Hearted Violet). Her posts are amazingly well written and I think she makes me cry at least every other piece lol. I highly recommend that you follow her and read her stuff, because I look forward to those awesome notification emails to arrive.
Her latest blog post, On cutting, and revising, and hanging on, and letting go, was all about those bits of our books that we resign ourselves to cutting-- even if it breaks our hearts. I recently went through this with my prologue. I fought with it, beat it, and thrust it on all of my critique partners. But in the end, it was decided that the story was stronger without it. For me, it was so painful to let go of that I simply removed it and placed it in a different folder lol.
Kelly asked everyone to share something from our own WIPs in a way of honoring those words that we lost. I can't, of course, share my entire prologue. It's too long and it is a bit too soon to be sharing so much of The Beast this early. Maybe when I release the book, I'll share the lost prologue. For now, you'll just have to be happy with this delicious snippet. Happy reading :)

Belle hurried passed the two guards and slowed once she entered the over-packed room. Chandeliers, lit with hundreds of candles, hung from the high reaching ceilings. The church was a mixture of shadows and flickering lights, giving it an ominous feel.
Everyone huddled together, pushing to get a better look at the front of the standing room. Anxiety and fear was thick in the air. Those at the back kept glancing behind, as if they expected something sinister to sneak up on them. Wanting to see what caused the commotion, Belle improperly began pushing her way through the crowd.
“Look out for the dogs, look out for the evildoers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh! Philippians 3:2,” shouted a voice as Belle made it to the front.
She froze, her eyes stuck to the ornate tiles before her. Covering the floor, as massive as a pony, lay a creature. A dog, but not a dog. Its fur was brown, shaggy, and wet. Belle’s eyes fell to its paws—so large one swipe could kill her.
A friar dared to lean close to its mouth. Silence fell. Belle feared it would slay him with the quick snap of its jaws. The man sat backward onto his heels, a solemn expression upon his face. “The beast is dead.”
